Rangers Dealt Transfer Setback As Potential McGregor Successor Seemingly Closes Door On Ibrox Switch

Schalke goalkeeper Martin Fraisl has dropped a massive hint that he intends to stay with the German club beyond the end of the season.

Rangers and Norwich City were both linked with signing the Austrian on a free transfer in the English press earlier this week. He has only five months left on his contract at the VELTINS-Arena but the keeper says he is open to signing an extension:

“I feel very, very comfortable at Schalke and like the people in and around the club. I like the Schalke mentality a lot. I can well imagine a contract extension. In general, I have a clear career plan. Before I met my wife, only my mother knew what to do next. Now my wife is also in the know. I only ever speak publicly about my career steps as soon as I have achieved them. But when you play in the second division with Schalke, you can imagine what my next big goal is.”

With Allan McGregor’s own contract set to expire this summer, it looked as though Fraisl may have been lined up as a potential replacement for the 40-year-old.

The Gers legend has not confirmed whether he will be hanging up his gloves at the end of the season or not. He could yet decide to play on but the Scottish champions do appear to be searching the market for potential alternatives.

In addition to Fraisl, Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist has also been mentioned as a potential target in recent weeks.
