Arsenal Set To Battle City As They Try To Land Two Time Champions League Winner On Free Transfer

Arsenal and Manchester City are both interested in Barcelona utility player Sergi Roberto, according to reports in the Spanish media.

The 29-year-old is said to have decided to leave the Camp Nou when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Both Roberto and Barca wanted to renew his current deal but, with president Joan Laporta only prepared to offer the player a two-year extension, talks have seemingly broken down.

The Spanish international has won six La Liga titles, two Champions League crowns as well as numerous other trophies during his ten years involved with the first team.

Roberto can either play as a central midfielder (where he has been selected for most of his 11 appearances this season) as well as at right-back; a position which he has played for the majority of his time at Barca.

Both roles are areas where the Gunners could do with strengthening. Manager Mikel Arteta does lack options in central midfield, while he doesn’t really have a strong backup for Takehiro Tomiyasu.
