Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s close relationship with Erling Haaland‘s family could prove pivotal in securing the Borussia Dortmund striker’s signature next summer, according to Rune Bratseth.
The Norwegian, who was a key player for Werder Bremen in the early 90s, believes that Haaland will likely choose a move to the Premier League, ahead of a switch to Spain:
“I think he will move to England. We Norwegians have a close relationship with the Premier League, it is very popular and is on TV everywhere here. Erling’s father, Alf Inge, used to be a professional in England. The two clubs from Manchester are very interesting for Haaland.”
“City haven’t bought a top striker this summer and Gabriel Jesus isn’t good enough for the club’s huge ambitions. So they will definitely want to sign Erling next summer. United have the advantage that coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a compatriot and a good friend of the Haalands.”
Solskjaer is an old international teammate of Haaland’s father, Alf Inge, whilst he managed Erling during his formative years at Molde so that strong connection cannot be overlooked.
However, as Bratseth also points out, money could also prove a decisive factor and Manchester City will be a tough opponent in that regard, having a hole burning in their pocket after failing to secure Harry Kane’s signature from Tottenham.
With Haaland expected to be available for just €75m (£64m) due to his release clause, though, sentiment may play a bigger role and that could aid United’s chances.
