Liverpool will now have to pay €80m (£67.5m) if they want to sign Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Pedro Goncalves, according to reports in the Portuguese media.

The 23-year-old, who has been compared to Bruno Fernandes by some journalists, has recently signed a new five-year contract with his club, which has led to an increase in his release clause.

Goncalves’s original buyout fee was €60m (£50.7m) but, as well as giving the Portuguese international a higher salary, Sporting will now be able to demand €20m more for the player.

The winger/number 10 has also been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United over the past twelve months, but Liverpool are said to be the Premier League team who hold the most interest in the midfielder.

Goncalves scored 23 goals in 37 appearances for Sporting last campaign and he has continued his rich vein of form in front of goal this season by scoring four times in 10 matches so far.
