Liverpool will not pay RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate’s €40m (£34m) release clause upfront, with sporting director Michael Edwards currently negotiating over paying the fee in instalments, according to Anfield Central.
The website reports that the financial impact of the global health crisis means the Merseyside club are currently unable to pay the full amount, although it is believed an agreement will be reached to sign the centre-back.
Whether this development will encourage other teams into making a move for Konate, well shall see. Reports on the continent suggested that Chelsea were also in contention to sign the 21-year-old, while Arsenal and Manchester United have previously been linked with the player.
At this stage, Liverpool remain red hot favourites to secure the France Under 21 international’s signature. The Reds seem to be keen to get their transfer business out of the way early, with the club not even waiting until the end of the season to make their move.
