Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson doesn’t believe that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would have been willing to pay the £100m that Manchester City spent on Jack Grealish last summer.

The Premier League champions triggered the England international’s release clause in order to bring him to the Etihad, but Merson says that their nearest challengers have a very different philosophy in the transfer market:

“Jack Grealish is a great player, but would Jurgen Klopp have paid £100 million for Jack Grealish? No, of course, he would not.”

To be honest, it’s difficult to see what Merson is getting at with his comment. Grealish has had a decent first season at City, although he still has some way to go to prove to people that he warrants his price tag.

Liverpool spent close to £50m on Luis Diaz during the January transfer window, which shows they are no slouches in terms of paying sizeable sums for players either.

Over the years, the Reds have invested in the likes of Virgil van Dijk (£75m) and Alisson Becker (£67m) too so, while they don’t necessarily spend as much as the Citizens, it’s not correct to label them as paupers.
