Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness thinks Chelsea currently have the second strongest squad on paper in the Premier League behind Manchester City.
The former Blackburn and Newcastle manager says that the Blues, rather than Liverpool or Manchester United, have the best squad to compete with the Citizens:
“I think City have an incredible squad, I’d go as far to say the best I’ve ever seen in English football, City. But I think Chelsea have the second-best group.”
Unlike City’s squad, though, which has very few weaknesses, Chelsea are still far from the finished article under Thomas Tuchel, and the fact that they are 20 points behind the league leaders in the table is proof of that.
Squad strength has certainly proved crucial for City this season. Manager Pep Guardiola has masterfully managed his players’ game time as they have battled for honours on all fronts, despite the truncated fixture schedule.
If they go on to lift multiple trophies, it would be an extraordinary achievement, especially after the challenges and problems that the Citizens faced in the opening months of the campaign.
