David Alaba has lashed out at Bayern Munich over his treatment after the Bundesliga club withdrew their contract offer to the player.

The team’s president Herbert Hainer revealed yesterday that the Austrian international was stalling on signing a new deal so they decided to withdraw the offer completely. However, Alaba has spoken out publicly to defend himself, stating he was left unhappy when he was offered to another club in the January transfer window:

“This respect and appreciation for what I was looking for, where the contract negotiations began, did not go in the right direction. That was a year ago. In times when coronavirus was still very far away. It went on and on. After the second or third conversation, I got a call and was asked if I could consider a swap. Where I then say: That’s a slap in the face somewhere.”

It is believed the club he was offered to was Manchester City. At the time, Bayern were trying to sign Leroy Sane and they were willing to let Alaba leave as part of the deal. The 28-year-old turned down the move at the time.

Ironically, though, the Citizens are now interested in taking him on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer. The likes of Manchester United and Liverpool are also reportedly keen on the defender, but it is thought that Juventus and PSG will be City’s main rivals for the fullback’s signature.
