Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has said he was left scratching his head when Anthony Martial replaced Fred in the closing stages of the game against Young Boys yesterday.

The Red Devils were down to ten men, with the scores level at the time, and Schmeichel doesn’t understand why manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to use Martial:

“It’s 1-1, he puts Martial on, we talked about that, that was really weird because Martial doesn’t defend well. He doesn’t work hard, he’s a goalscorer but we’re down to 10 men, we don’t expect to create many chances, so why put Martial on?”

Schmeichel also raised questions about other decisions that Solskjaer made last night, including leaving out Raphael Varane and Mason Greenwood from the starting lineup, as well as replacing Cristiano Ronaldo with Jesse Lingard in the second half.

It is fair to say that Solskjaer did not have a very good evening in Bern, and his decision-making will be under the microscope going forward.

Schmeichel is not the only former teammate of the Norwegian who has made comments about his managerial ability either, with Paul Scholes also questioning whether Solskjaer has the tactical acumen to compete with the likes of Pep Guardiola, Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp.
