The Athletic journalist Kieran Devlin has confirmed that Celtic are weighing up a “short term loan” for Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
The website’s Hoops’ correspondent says the Scottish champions don’t appear to have many targets for the January transfer window, despite their stuttering form, but Forster is a player who is being looked at:
“The only name I’ve heard, and it’s from only one source so it’s by no means certain, is potentially going back in for Fraser Forster. I believe the club feel another short-term loan can be achieved and that, despite them feeling slighted after the goalkeeper turned down another loan in the summer, both parties could be open to the move. This is especially relevant given Forster hasn’t been granted either a regular first-team opportunity at Southampton or a permanent move away from the south coast.”
As Devlin mentions, Forster opted against returning to Parkhead in the summer, but he may have had a change of heart following a number of months playing second fiddle to Alex McCarthy at the Saints.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon is clearly unhappy with his goalkeeping options, with £5m signing Vasilis Barkas having flattered to deceive since his arrival from AEK Athens in the summer.
Supporters remain divided over whether they would welcome Forster’s return but it appears that the club have no qualms about going back in for the 32-year-old in the New Year. Whether they will be able to get their man this time, we shall have to wait and see.
