BT Sport pundit Peter Crouch says he expects either Manchester City or Liverpool to lift the Champions League trophy this season.
The former England international believes it will be hard to separate the teams in Europe and he predicts that the two Premier League sides will line up against each other in the final:
“Two all-English finals in three years says it all and you would not bet against that turning into three out of four when Saint Petersburg comes around on May 28. I cannot see much past the Premier League clubs. Liverpool and City are my favourites and I’m struggling to split them in Europe.”
Crouch does not rule out reigning champions Chelsea either but he is less convinced about their chances of making it all the way to St Petersburg:
“Chelsea, crowned world champions over the weekend, have a real opportunity to defend the trophy too. Joe Cole still keeps in touch with the guys at Lille and they fancy their chances in their last-16 match but Chelsea should be too strong.”
The absence of a Champions League title is the one big blot on Pep Guardiola’s record, despite his incredible success since his arrival at the Etihad back in 2016.
City should, in all honesty, have won last year’s final but a combination of poor tactics from the manager, and disappointing performances from the players, meant they fell at the last hurdle. The club will be looking to go one better this campaign.
