West Ham did make a concerted effort to sign Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips in January but didn’t come close to meeting the 26-year-old’s asking price, according to ExWHUemployee.

The insider source claims he is not certain whether the Hammers will go back in for the England international this summer as David Moyes doesn’t really need another player in central midfield:

“There was definite interest in him 100% but obviously, we weren’t offering the money that they wanted us to offer, as per some would say and it didn’t get anywhere close to happening. So I’d be interested to see what happens in the summer whether we go back for him but if it was down to me, I don’t think that’s the priority position.”

Multiple reports have suggested that Phillips will not be sold for less than £60m and, with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Aston Villa also pursuing his signature, it would be a very difficult transfer to pull off.

Signing such a high-profile player may only be feasible if West Ham finish in the top four or win the Europa League, with either route guaranteeing them a place in next season’s Champions League group stages.

Neither scenario can be ruled out but supporters should probably keep their expectations in check in regards to signing Phillips.
