Former Rangers fullback Alan Hutton suspects that Allan McGregor will hang up his gloves in the summer.
Hutton conducted an interview with McGregor for BT Sport before the Braga game on Thursday night and the Gers shot-stopper refused to say whether he was looking to play beyond the end of the season. Hutton feels the 40-year-old’s retirement is on the horizon:
“I would like to see him play on. I think he’s got a lot more to give if I’m brutally honest. But, talking to him, I think this could be coming towards the end. What an ending it would be to finally reach a European Final, because he missed the 2008 one. It would be great for him.”
As we have seen this season, McGregor can clearly still cut it at the highest level, having made some outstanding saves, but there are signs that he is on the wane, having dropped in a few poor performances too.
As Hutton says, it would be a fantastic send-off if Rangers were to reach the Europa League final, but they will have to come from behind in the second leg of their quarter-final tie, after losing 1-0 in Portugal. Even if the Bears get through, they will have to get past RB Leipzig or Atalanta in order to reach the showpiece event next month, so we shall see if McGregor gets the goodbye he deserves.
