Ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes Connor Goldson may be questioning whether to leave Ibrox at the end of the season after the events of Thursday night.
The Gers secured passage to the last 16 of the Europa League after a courageous second leg performance against Borussia Dortmund, and Ferguson has asked why Goldson would want to give up the opportunity of playing in such incredible games:
“As the final whistle blew, the camera panned to Connor Goldson standing in the middle of that pitch, taking in the scene of absolute joy all around him. You could see on his face he was just thinking, ‘Wow.’ It’s nights like that which make you realise just how special a place Ibrox is.”
“Connor has got a major decision to make in the next couple of months with his contract almost up. Does he stay for more of this or return back down south, perhaps for another crack at the Premier League. But he needs to consider what he’s giving up.”
It does seem like a bit of a no-brainer for Goldson. Most of the interest from English clubs seems to be in the second tier, with West Brom and Nottingham Forest the most heavily linked, so there is no real footballing reason to leave Rangers.
Wages appear to be the main sticking point, and it may well be the case that Goldson is waiting to see whether the club qualifies for the Champions League before making a final decision on his future. Funds from European qualification could be crucial to agreeing a new contract so we may not know more about Goldson’s situation until later on in the season.
