Rangers will need to get past two qualifying rounds if they want to progress to the group stages of the Champions League next season.

The third qualifying round, which takes place in early August, could see the Light Blues face off against Monaco, Sturm Graz, Fenerbahce, FC Midtjylland or Union Saint-Gilloise.

If they overcome that hurdle, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are most likely to face the likes of Dynamo Kyiv or PSV Eindhoven in the playoff round.

Kyiv have won three European trophies in their history, including two Cup Winners Cups and one UEFA Super Cup. PSV, meanwhile, won the European Cup in 1988 and the UEFA Cup a decade earlier.

Rangers, of course, have their own European pedigree, and their performances in last season’s Europa League should hold them in good stead, having beaten high-profile teams such as Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

One concern, though, is that the games are being played so early in the campaign. It will be crucial that van Bronckhorst has most of his first-team squad in place ahead of the qualifiers.
