Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon believes Bukayo Saka has the potential to reach the top of the professional game.
The winger scored on his 20th birthday in England’s 4-0 win over Andorra on Sunday and, speaking after the match, Dixon was full of praise for the youngster:
“You forget what an age (Saka is playing like). He was basically one of the two who carried the Arsenal team last season. For such a young player, everybody was looking at him to change a game, to win a game.”
“And he’s come into the England side – certainly in the Euros – he was the one that got the ball. And today, we saw he’s got a pass, he’s got a cross, he’s got the ability to take players on and commit players. He’s going to be an absolute superstar, I’m pretty sure of that.”
As Dixon points out, Saka has been one of the Gunners’ best players over the past eighteen months and he is fully deserving of all the accolades that have been coming his way.
It is not only his footballing ability that should be commended, though, but also his mental fortitude. After missing the crucial penalty in the Euro 2020 final, he has not let anything phase him.
Saka could have been forgiven for starting the season poorly after a difficult summer but he continues to perform at a very high level, and it is scary to think how good he could be when he hits his prime in five or six years’ time.
