Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes that Ben White still needs to show that he can lead and organise a backline.

The BBC pundit says he is an admirer of what the 24-year-old brings with his ability on the ball, but he feels improvement is required when it comes to other aspects of his game:

“When you look at him in possession, the way he comes out with the ball; really confident, playing some superb passes.“The defensive side is where you want to look, and I think that’s improving. And then it’s about forming where is the line, where’s your opponent, the ball. And forming that partnership and becoming a leader. That’s the next step.”

Keown is right on the money here. White has demonstrated his capabilities in bringing the ball out from the back since signing from Brighton in the summer for £50m.

However, there are some facets to his game that are far less polished. He can be rash sometimes in his decision-making, and that can disrupt the team’s organisation at the back.

White does look good when he is partnered with Gabriel, and it will be hoped that the more time they spend on the pitch together, the greater their understanding will develop, with their best attributes rubbing off on each other.
