Arsenal have approached Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri about potentially becoming the club’s next manager, according to Il Messaggero.
The Italian newspaper, which isn’t always that reliable, has claimed that the Gunners have “already tested the ground” to see whether the 63-year-old would be keen on replacing Mikel Arteta.
No more detail is given, which suggests that Arsenal may simply have made a cursory enquiry at some point, but it is still surprising that the club are even weighing up a potential change of manager.
Arsenal are very much in the fight to finish in the top four, which wasn’t something that many supporters had expected earlier in the season.
It is debatable whether Sarri would be a good choice to replace Arteta if the campaign does end poorly. The former Chelsea head coach has guided Lazio to sixth in the Serie A table, which is respectable, but it’s hardly a spectacular achievement.
