Arsenal legend Sol Campbell believes his former club have made a good decision to snap up Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna.

The Gunners paid £17m to sign the Japanese international before the transfer window closed, and Campbell thinks the defender has a lot of potential:

“Takehiro Tomiyasu, from Bologna. He’s a defender, good, 22, looks strong – another potential player. That’s what we’re looking at at the moment.”

Tomiyasu is certainly not the most experienced of players, but manager Mikel Arteta is believed to be a big fan of the defender, who can play both as a right-back and centre-back.

Campbell did also have a lot to say about Arsenal’s overall transfer policy. He feels that the London club should have focused on signing fewer, proven talents this summer, rather than investing all of their budget into players with potential:

“I’d rather take two transfers – money and wages – and buy a ready-to-go player and then you can pad it out with some other potentials as well. I’d much prefer that type of way and build up over the next two or three years. Every year buy those kind of signature players that can give you that instant success… instant success? Well maybe proven and they’re more likely going to work out.”

Whether the strategy to sign promising young stars like Tomiyasu will work out in the long run, it is difficult to know at the moment, but fans will be hoping that the Gunners’ summer signings can make an impact on the team sooner rather than later.
