Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has praised the contributions of Mason Mount and Timo Werner against Real Madrid last night.
The pair pressed high up the pitch for Mount’s opening goal, and Cole was particularly impressed with the combination play between the two players:
“Mason is combining well with Timo up front which allows them that time in midfield when the ball turns over. They didn’t give Real Madrid a minute and it was an elite showing of how to press a world-class team.”
While the Blues were ultimately knocked out during extra-time after what was a heroic comeback, both Mount and Werner, as well as many others, can be proud of their performances at the Bernabeu.
Mount has been in excellent form recently, backing up his two goals and assist against Southampton at the weekend, with another goal yesterday evening.
Werner, meanwhile, thought he had scored the crucial winner midway through the second half versus Real, but it just wasn’t to be. The German does look like he has turned a corner in a Blues shirt, after struggling for the majority of his two seasons at the club, but we shall see how he finishes the campaign.
